Emre Can overcomes injury scare to book semi-final spot with Germany

Liverpool’s Emre Can came through a recent injury setback on Sunday to feature in Germany’s final Confederations Cup Group B match.

The midfielder had sustained what was deemed to be a minor knock in the team’s final training session but was able to recover in time to play 90 minutes in his side’s 3-1 win over Cameroon.

Kerem Demirbay’s opener and Timo Werner’s brace helped Joachim Low’s side to a comfortable victory in the end, despite Vincent Aboubakar pulling one back for Cameroon with the score at 2-0.

Germany’s win secured them a semi-final clash with Mexico, scheduled for June 29, with the winner then set to face either Portugal or Chile in the final.

Can started in central midfield for the second consecutive game in the tournament and put in another commanding performance to follow up his solid display in Germany’s 1-1 draw against Chile, in which he played a key role in his team’s equaliser.

Sunday’s clash with Cameroon saw the Liverpool man remind all of his progress as a box-to-box midfielder, displaying the kind of attacking ambition that saw him emerge as an influential figure under Jurgen Klopp towards the end of last season.

Success on the international stage would pose as the ideal start to the summer for a man Liverpool are hoping will continue playing full of confidence when he returns for pre-season.
