Leeds United sign former Liverpool Academy star Madger Gomes

Former Liverpool youngster Madger Gomes hasn’t taken long to settle his immediate future, completing a move to Championship promotion hopefuls Leeds United.

Gomes was signed by the Reds from Villarreal in September 2014 and arrived with a promising reputation that was justified early on when he became a regular for the club’s U18s.

He has since failed to make the kind of impact his potential suggested he would and was one of seven players released by the club this summer.

The 20-year-old has now made the move to Elland Road on a three-year deal and will initially join up with Leeds’ U23s squad where he will begin to compete for first team involvement.

“I’m really excited and happy to start life with Leeds United, I hope to have a good season here,” Gomes told Leeds’ official club website.

“Hopefully I will get a chance to progress and make the first team as my dream is to play professionally.”

Leeds are preparing for their first season under newly-appointed manager Thomas Christiansen, who will be looking to go one better than his predecessor Garry Monk.

The Whites looked all set at one stage last season to cruise to a top six finish and secure their place in the playoffs, only to fall short after an end-of-season collapse.

Nevertheless, Gomes finds himself at a club seemingly on the rise and one that appears dedicated to youth development, thereby giving the midfielder an opportunity to impress.

Among the other six that left Anfield three weeks ago are Adam Phillips, Tom Brewitt, Jack Dunn, Kane Lewis, Jake Brimmer and veteran goalkeeper Alex Manninger, who has retired to become a joiner.
