The nature of modern day football means fans can be forgiven for believing the transfer window starts long before July.
Unrelenting transfer rumours, daily developments and tenuous links inspired by social media activity are all traits that surface earlier and earlier every year.
Though a number of high-profile deals had seemingly taken place taken place in May and June, July 1 represents the first day of the summer transfer window.
This therefore means Dominic Solanke and Mohamed Salah officially became Liverpool players on Saturday, having finalised their proposed moves weeks in advance.
July 1 unsurprisingly poses as one of the busiest days in the transfer window, on which Liverpool have technically signed 19 players since 1995, according to stats by lfchistory.net.
- Stan Collymore, 1995
Stan Collymore signed for Liverpool for £8.5million and scored 35 goals in 81 games for the club, in which time he also scored the winner in the famous 4-3 win over Newcastle.
- Erik Meijer, 1999
Striker Erik Meijer joined the Reds on a free transfer in 1999 after catching the eye during his time a Bayer Leverkusen. Despite arriving with a positive reputation, he only went on to score two goals in 27 appearances for the Reds before joining Preston North End on loan in 2000 and eventually making a permanent switch to Hamburger in the same year.
- Gary McAllister, 2000
Liverpool pulled off what turned out to be an inspired free signing when Gary McAllister joined the club in 2000. Though the Scottish midfielder was 35-years-old when he arrived, he went on to play an influential role in the club winning the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup to secure the treble in his first season at Anfield.

Defender Markus Babbel swapped Bayern Munich for Liverpool in 2000 and emerged as another standout performer in the club’s treble-winning season. A four-year spell at the club saw him make 73 appearances and score six goals.
- Pegguy Arphexad, 2000
Goalkeeper Pegguy Arphexad only made six appearances for Liverpool after being brought in as a backup for Sander Westerveld. His three years at the club also saw him spend time on loan at Stockport County, before he then endured similarly unproductive spells at Coventry City, Notts County and Olympique Marseille between 2003-2005.
- Florent Sinama-Pongolle, 2003
French forward Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined from Le Havre in 2003 before scoring nine goals in 66 appearances for the club. Standout moments include his equalising goal in Liverpool’s crucial Champions League clash against Olympiacos and his goal in the thrilling 5-3 FA Cup win over Luton Town. The club went on to win both competitions. Pongolle now plays for Thai club Chainat Hornbill.
- Anthony Le Tallec, 2003
Anthony Le Tallec arrived with Pongolle in 2003 with an eye-opening reputation as a future Liverpool star. After showing so much promise in the lead up to his big move, Le Tallec only managed one goal in 32 games for the club and was sent out on loan five times between 2001-2008 before sealing a permanent move to Le Mans. He now plays for Greek side Atromitos Athens Football Club.
- Steve Finnan, 2003
Right-back Steven Finnan signed for £3.5million in 2003, winning the Champions League, the Super Cup, the FA Cup and the Community Shield and making 217 appearances during his five years at the club. Ridiculously underrated.
- Djibril Cissé, 2004
After a prolific 2003/04 season for French club Auxerre, Cisse was signed by Liverpool for £14.5million and went on to win the Champions League, FA Cup and Super Cup with the Reds. He scored 24 goals in 79 games in his three years on Merseyside, including Liverpool’s opener in the club’s 2006 FA Cup final win over West Ham.
- Craig Bellamy, 2006
Liverpool signed Craig Bellamy from Blackburn in 2006 and was an unused substitute in the 2007 Champions League final, which the Reds lost 2-1 to AC Milan. After spells with West Ham, Manchester City and Cardiff City, he re-signed for the club in 2011 and went on to win the 2012 League Cup final. Overall, he scored 18 times in 79 games during his time at Anfield.
- Sebastian Leto, 2007
Winger Sebastián Leto signed for £1.8m from Argentinian club Lanús in 2007 but was unable to fulfil the potential he arrived with, making only four competitive appearances and spending a season on-loan at Olympiacos before signing permanently with Panathinaikos in 2009.
- Dani Pacheco, 2007
Forever known as Liverpool’s next big star. The Spaniard was tipped as a future star after arriving from Barcelona’s highly-regarded youth setup but was never able to live up to expectation. After being sent out on-loan four times during his time with the Reds, he was eventually sold to Alcorcón in 2013. He then signed for Real Betis in 2014 and has since spent time at Alavés and Getafe on loan.
- Adam Lallana, 2014
Liverpool signed Adam Lallana from Southampton in 2014 for a fee of £25million as one of many players to be bought with the money generated by the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona. The midfielder has scored 21 goals in 125 appearances for the club so far, and produced arguably his best form in a Liverpool shirt last season, emerging as an influential figure under Klopp.
- James Milner, 2015
James Milner was signed from Manchester City on a free in 2015 and has since been named as the club’s vice-captain after proving to be one of the most inspired pieces of business this club has seen in recent years. 85 games later, he has scored 14 goals and demonstrated his class by featuring as a makeshift left-back for most of last season.
- Nathaniel Clyne, 2015
Nathaniel Clyne joined at the same time, arriving from Southampton for a bargain fee of £12.5million as one of the Premier League’s most reliable full-backs.
- Adam Bogdan, 2015
Adam Bogdan was signed from Bolton as a backup shot-stopper and started life on Merseyside well, saving three penalties in a League Cup third round tie shootout win against Carlisle United. It went downhill from then with the Hungarian making a costly error in a crushing 3-0 defeat against Watford at Vicarage Road.
- Danny Ings, 2015
Two years after joining the Reds from Burnley, Danny Ings has only made 11 appearances and scored three goals for the club. Serious knee injuries have seen him sidelined for the majority of both seasons he has been at the club, thereby making 2017/2018 an interesting campaign in terms of what the striker might offer when fully fit again.

Young German goalkeeper Loris Karius was signed by Mainz as healthy competition for Simon Mignolet in 2016 and was named as the club’s No.1 by Klopp halfway through last season. A nervy start to his Anfield career and notable mistakes, though, saw him lose his place to Mignolet. Time on his side and lots of promise.
- Joel Matip, 2016
As a free transfer from Schalke, Joel Matip has the potential to become one of Liverpool’s best signings for the past 10 years and finally a long-term solution to the club’s apparent defensive frailties. He needed less than half a season to consolidate his place as Klopp’s strongest first choice centre-back.
