LFC ace reveals how gruesome Klopp’s pre-season really is…

Liverpool’s longest serving player Lucas Leiva has told fans just how intense pre-season training is under Jurgen Klopp…

Our manager is infamous for his brutal summer preparations, in which his players are rigorously drilled in order to obtain peak fitness ahead of the new campaign.

According to the Brazilian, it’s hard work!

In an interview with LFCTV, Lucas said:

“It just gets harder and harder!

“They try to test everything – power, balance, stamina, everything. It’s good,” he explained.

“We had a plan to do during the break; it wasn’t too hard, just to make sure we got here in good shape to start pre-season because that’s what pre-season is about: fitness and getting better.

“It builds up. It’s very intense, like it should be. But when you have experience you know how to manage it.

“I’ve missed the ball a lot. I haven’t played football for my whole holiday. So it will be good to start with the ball and get together again and get the movement going. Hopefully by August we’ll all be very, very fit.

“We finished the season on a high. Of course, it’s a new season. We have to do the same and even better. It’s a new challenge.

“The second pre-season, you know what it’s like and how the manager wants us to work. On this side, it’s positive. Hopefully we’ll start in a good way, like we finished.”

There’s no guarantee that Lucas will be at Liverpool this coming campaign…

Klopp would happily utilise the 30-year-old as a squad player, but Lucas, perhaps fairly, wants the first-team football that is not readily available under the German.

Lucas was only selected last term when others were injured, so it might be time for him to make a switch and finish his career on a high.

The South American is fantastic for the dressing room and deserves respect, but Klopp cannot provide him the minutes his talent deserves.

In fairness though, we say this every transfer window, and Lucas stays put – so we wouldn’t be surprised if he’s part of the squad come the start of the season!
