(Video) LFC youngster proves he deserves chance with tenacious Wigan display

The minimum Jurgen Klopp asks for from his players in pre-season is maximum effort and it’s for that reason that Pedro Chirivella deserves his chance to impress.

Friday night was the young Spaniard’s latest opportunity to showcase his expertise as Liverpool played out a 1-1 draw in their friendly against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Though it was by no means a standout performance, Chirivella looked a far more accomplished player and as though he has improved significantly over the past year.

Last season saw the 20-year-old enjoy a relatively productive short-term loan spell with Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles, in which time he made 17 appearances, scored two goals and registered a further two assists, not to mention gaining valuable first team experience.

The midfielder followed up his goal in Wednesday’s pre-season win over Tranmere with a notable all-action display in central midfield, impressing with some strong and assured tackling, composed passing, some neat turns and an ambition to join in with attacks.

Perhaps more importantly, he worked incredibly hard for the 45 minutes he was on the pitch and gave his manager a welcomed reminder that he is prepared to fight for a future on Merseyside.

A place in first team next season remains highly unlikely, but another campaign as a prominent figure in the U23s team or a temporary move to a Premier League side could see him step up his game to the next level.

Few can argue with the idea he deserves his shot.
