Klopp’s comments make his transfer priority very, very obvious…

Liverpool clearly need a new defender who can lead, organise and boost the backline – as there’s nothing wrong the frontline – especially now Mo Salah has been purchased.

In fairness, this has been the opinion of most supporters since midway through last season, but Jurgen Klopp agrees.

Liverpool’s boss has been discussing what needs to change ahead of the new campaign for his side to be successful.

It’s not that we need other ways to attack, but better ways to defend…

“I know people think about this, but in our ‘non-existing Plan B’ they always talk about offensive things but that makes not too much sense because we scored absolutely enough goals. If we concede less and score the same number, that would make the biggest difference,” he told the official website.

“We have to be concentrated on this, we have to defend different situations better and not to think about how we could make the other teams crazy with all the qualities we have.

“With the quality and skills of the boys, you immediately have different options offensively – but to be organised is the main thing. If you have four or five very offensively orientated players then all good, that’s what everybody wants… if they are ready to defend.

“Otherwise you have no chance – you will have how we felt a few times, you can have 80 per cent possession but in the end if they have one situation then 1-0.”

The manager undeniably has a point. If we’d have shored up our backline, then draws against the likes of Bournemouth, West Ham and Sunderland to name but a few would have been victories and we’d have been involved in a title race instead of one for fourth.

Naby Keita is a target, but Virgil van Dijk is of greater necessity. The Dutchman was tremendous for Southampton last term and will add all the required attributes to our back four.

He’s told his club he wants to leave and now it remains to be seen whether they’ll accept a bid for his services.
