Kolo Toure has revealed Liverpool’s devastating finish to the 2013/2014 campaign as his main regret in an otherwise remarkable career.
The Ivorian was a key figure in the Brendan Rodgers side that fell agonisingly short of winning the Premier League title and eventually finished second behind Manchester City.
With three games to go and having recently beaten City, the Reds looked in the driving seat to lift the trophy, only to fall to a crushing defeat at home to Chelsea before drawing 3-3 with Crystal Palace a week later to ultimately end their title hopes.
“I nearly won the league with Liverpool (in 2014) and I feel privileged for that,” Toure told Press Association Sport.
“That’s my only regret to be honest because we nearly won the Premier League and came so close twice in the final of the Europa League and League Cup.”
Toure added to his impressive resume last season, helping Celtic go unbeaten on their road to another Scottish Premier League title and, in turn, repeating his 2003/2004 season with Arsenal to become a double ‘Invincible’.
The 36-year-old has since been released by the Scottish champions and while already considering a future in coaching, has reiterated that he remains open to prolonging his playing career.
Failing to win the title with Liverpool a few years ago is something he certainly isn’t alone in regretting, although he will be remembered as part of a team that produced a number of unforgettable goals, performances and victories.
