Guardian sports editor Ed Aarons has claimed we’ve asked Nice about the availability of Jean Michael Seri – their combative 26-year-old Ivorian.

A report suggests that he’s available for €40m, which in today’s market, isn’t exactly enormous, with Nice crucially telling him they won’t stand in his way if a bigger club comes in.

Barcelona were keen, but have decided on Paulinho instead, while PSG are also monitoring his situation. Arsenal are too, but have to sell before they buy as they’re overloaded centrally.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed we need another central midfielder, so we can see this story having serious legs.

Seri is short and stocky, but robust with a wonderful touch. In a box-to-box role, he scored seven goals and registered nine assists last term in France, earning Nice qualification into the Champions League Play Off in the process.

He shares many of Naby Keita’s physical and technical traits and having seen Gini Wijnaldum’s ineffective central midfield outing at Watford, would be excited to see Seri join.
