Klopp: Why I’m not playing £10m Robertson

One of the oddities from the beginning of this season has been that Alberto Moreno has started both our matches at left-back.

The Spaniard barely got a look-in during 2016/17 and it looked for all the world that he’d be sold before this campaign begun, but in fairness he enjoyed a productive pre-season and has proved some of his doubters wrong.

But Liverpool paid £10m to sign Andrew Robertson from Hull and many have been shocked the Scot hasn’t even been selected on the bench yet.

Klopp has preferred James Milner as a substitute because he can play multiple positions.

“Whether he’s overly happy, I didn’t ask, but he’s in a good moment,” Klopp told a press conference yesterday, cited in the Echo.

“He has developed really well so far. He’s a really good player but it’s how it is with specialist left full-backs. You either play or it’s possible you aren’t in the squad.

“Everything is fine from my side. It’s still early. He came in late and still has to adapt to our style of play and all that stuff.

“Things will change during the season and I’ve told the players that.

“I was a player myself a few years ago, it’s not easy but it’s much too early to think about this. It’s a long season ahead.

“The rule is that if you train really good and work really hard, you improve and develop, then everything will be good at the end.”

Moreno committed a few defensive errors against Hoffenheim, despite playing well at Watford, and in all honesty – we’d much prefer Robertson be given the spot.

However, against Crystal Palace tomorrow, we expect Moreno to continue – but with Milner likely to start ahead of Jordan Henderson centrally – our 23-year-old signing may feature on his first bench.
