Suggestions arise that Barca’s 3rd Coutinho bid had an ulterior motive

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague reckons Barcelona were being savvy with their third rejected Coutinho bid…

After we rebuffed two offers for our wantaway Brazilian, the Catalans came back with a £118m bid (which was actually £80m-odd and a lot of ridiculous add-ons).

It was immediately rejected by Liverpool, but Balaugue has suggested on Twitter that Barca were expecting this and only publicly launched the offer to ‘cheapen other targets’.

We guess he means that by displaying they were ready to spend such a sum, clubs like Borussia Dortmund would get nervous that Barca’s cash wouldn’t end up at their door and be more inclined to offload their player (in this case Ousmane Dembele) quickly.

For us, this doesn’t make much sense, actually, especially considering the deadline Barca put on their Coutinho offer.

We’re entirely confident they desperately wanted our no.10, but were not ready for FSG to stand so firm once the player had handed in a transfer request thanks to their ruthless tapping up.

Hopefully, Coutinho will be back on the field not long after the transfer window closes.
