Klopp addresses surprise fear for Liverpool after Sevilla draw

Jurgen Klopp is refusing to be concerned by his Liverpool team’s lack of conviction in front of goal in recent games.

The Reds had plenty of chances to overcome Sevilla in Wednesday night’s Champions League group stage opener against Sevilla, but failed to take advantage and were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw.

After going behind early on through Wissam Ben Yedder’s opener, Liverpool responded in superb fashion to equalise through Roberto Firmino before securing a 2-1 lead heading into half time thanks to Mohamed Salah’s deflected effort.

Liverpool’s typically explosive approach was nowhere to be seen after the break, with Klopp’s men failing to find the quality required in the final third.

“If we shoot that often and don’t score then probably it is a problem, but I don’t think it will be like this,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“In a game like this, usually you score more often than we did tonight, so nobody should rely on this that we try that often and don’t score.”

“The most important thing in football is creating chances and we did that in different situations. I know a lot of people will say it was counter-attack and yes, a few chances we had were after counter-attacks.”

“Could we have scored? Yes, but we didn’t. We know we have to improve on this, but it’s not an illness that you can change it. We will work on this like we work on other parts of our game, for sure.”

Any concern amongst Reds regarding wasted chances stems from a knowledge of just how clinical the likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah usually are.

Big chances passed Liverpool by, although that shouldn’t be perceived as the pressing worry- which very much remains to be the team’s dysfunctional defence.

It’s for this reason that struggling to outscore opponents threatens to become a serious issue moving forward.

That said, it was a game of fine margins. If Firmino scores his penalty, the chances are that Liverpool cruise to a win.

Klopp isn’t worrying about it, so neither should we.
