LFC fans in limbo over Russian travel plans as Spartak face potential ban

This is a potentially difficult situation…

Liverpool are due to play Spartak Moscow away from home in 11 days’ time on September 26, but our Champions League opponents may be forced to play the game behind closed doors, reports the Telegraph.

Their behaviour during their midweek trip to Maribor was condemned as violent and dangerous, with a flare being shot towards the referee on the playing field.

There was also skirmishes and fights with Slovenian police outside the ground and as a result, UEFA have opened an investigation which could lead to a warning, a fine or a stadium ban which will force Spartak to play us behind closed doors.

This obviously has an impact on fans planning on travelling to Moscow for the match.

Liverpool have contacted UEFA for assurances and an update, but as usual they’re being tremendously unhelpful – refusing to comment on the issue until their announcement – set for five days before the game is due to take place.

“We do not make any comment on open disciplinary cases,” Uefa said this afternoon.

“The decision of the disciplinary body will be announced on 21 September.”

Around 1,200 tickets for Liverpool supporters go on sale today. They’ll obviously be refunded if sanctions incur a stadium ban, but those who’ve already arranged travel may be left out of pocket.
