‘It was rather strange’ – Norwegian teenager speaks out on Liverpool interest

Olaus Jair Skarsem admits he was a little taken back by stories linking him to Liverpool.

The Reds have been monitoring the midfielder’s development since he made his first-team debut for Rosenborg last year.

It is also expected that Liverpool, along with a number of other Premier League clubs, will watch him in Wednesday’s under-19 cup semi-final against Viking.

Commenting on the rumours, Skarsem told Adresseavisen: “It was rather strange and obviously not something I had expected but it’s motivational as well and shows that I’m doing something right, whether there is anything to it or not.”

“I don’t really have much to say about the [reports], I know as much as anyone else who has read the articles. It’s nice to be linked with big clubs, but there is very little concrete so it’s not something I can consider.”

“Of course it’s a big club with a great history. Naturally it would be interesting, but it’s not something I can think about now. I haven’t heard anything, I’ve just read the articles myself. I can’t think about it, I have to focus on Rosenborg.”

Strengthening the club’s youth ranks has emerged as a priority in recent seasons, with Liverpool’s ‘quality over quantity’ approach giving fans good reason to take note of the youngsters that do arrive.

That proved to be the case earlier this year with the arrival of Norwegian 16-year-old Edvard Tagseth, who has grown to be a star figure in Steven Gerrard’s U18s side.

Liverpool’s academy is becoming an increasingly attractive project to be a part of thanks to not only the personnel in charge, but also the visible progression of young players.
