Steven Gerrard has hyped youngster Rafa Camacho following Liverpool’s 4-0 win against Sevilla in the UEFA Youth League.
The victory over in Spain means his youngsters have qualified for the Last 16 with a game to spare, unlike Jurgen Klopp’s seniors, who still need to do a job at home to Spartak Moscow.
Gerrard deployed a 3-5-2 formation, which suited his players perfectly, especially Rafa Camacho, who put in a barnstorming performance from right wing-back.
It’s not the teenage starlet’s favoured role, but he performed excellently.
“Rafa Camacho will tell you that it’s probably not his favourite position but he can become a top wing-back if he wants to,” Gerrard told the Echo.
Wing-back is wrongly considered a defensive position, but in a good, attacking side – it really isn’t.
These players see huge amounts of the ball and are often more advanced than the central midfielders.
But Gerrard, although keen to praise Camacho, was equally pleased with his team’s overall outing, which was told to him by Sevilla’s coach:
“Their manager said to me after the game: ‘You’ve got a superb team.’ That’s credit to the players. He didn’t say to me: ‘You’ve got some good individuals.’
“That’s what pleased me most. That was a top, top team performance, especially away in Europe.”
