Hendo makes ‘captain’s promise’ ahead of Chelsea clash

Jordan Henderson has spoken following his side’s 3-3 draw with Sevilla on Wednesday evening.

Liverpool’s captain came in for intense criticism, after some poor statistics highlighting his performance circled Twitter.

The Englishman completed just 55% of his passes and won no tackles or aerial duels, which certainly didn’t help us the second-half when the Spaniards were at full throttle and Liverpool needed to stem the tide.

On top of being slammed for his poor individual outing, fans questioned his leadership role, but Hendo has promised to get everyone back in the right frame of mind before this evening’s Chelsea game.

“I’m going to try and pick everyone up, which won’t be easy but I’ll try my best,” he began.

“We expect big things as a team and club and with the players we’ve got we have to be winning every week, really,” the skipper told Premier League Productions, cited in the Echo.

“That is the pressure we put ourselves under so, when we don’t perform to the levels we should, then of course there will be criticism and of course that will hurt.

“You have to use that as best you can. I’ve been in that position a few times in my career and I’ve tried to use it to my advantage every time I step onto the pitch.

“I’ve felt a responsibility throughout my career when I’ve played and had a bad defeat or bad game, so it does affect me. But as a captain I have to forget about myself and think about the team really.

“For the weekend, it is best for the team to stay positive and keep the momentum we have sort of built over the last few weeks.”

Hendo’s talking absolute sense.

He was poor against Sevilla, but some of the abuse he’s received online is just laughable and sadly symbolic of the modern internet football fan.

You’re either world-class or a fraud; changing on a weekly basis – no in between.

The reality is that a draw in Sevilla is a good result and we’re still strong favourites to win the group.
