Henderson: Klopp’s new selection approach evidently working

Jordan Henderson has urged his teammates to keep themselves ready for action in Jurgen Klopp’s current period of team rotation.

The Liverpool boss has implemented a new focus on preserving key players where possible in preparation for the Premier League’s typically hectic winter schedule.

After seeing his side beat Stoke 3-0 during the week, Klopp made six changes to his starting lineup for Saturday’s 5-1 win away to Brighton.

Besides providing rest to vital members of the squad, Henderson believes Klopp’s alterations can drive the players to fight even harder for their places.

“Well it’s worked so far. We’ve made another six changes again, everybody looks good, looks fresh,” Henderson told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Of course you’re going to be disappointed when you don’t play but you’ve got to make sure you’re ready to come on or play the next game and it’s been working well for us so far so we need to keep it going.”

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Spartak Moscow, the skipper added: “It’s another big game for us mid-week, but we’ve just got to keep playing the way we have been the last few weeks, keep the momentum going and if we do that then it’ll be a good night for us at Anfield.”

Klopp’s team changes have served up a timely reminder of the attacking strength in depth at his disposal when everyone is fit.

League fixtures against Brighton, Stoke and Chelsea over the past two weeks have granted starts for the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Daniel Sturridge and Dominic Solanke.

The use of the trio has subsequently seen fellow attacking stars Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino handed useful rests.

Liverpool’s midweek clash with Spartak will be another opportunity for Klopp to flex his options, although he may revert to a more familiar starting eleven than in recent weeks with the Reds on the brink of qualification.
