Klopp apologises to Hughton but insists he ‘Wasn’t Disrespectful’

Jurgen Klopp has cleared up the misunderstanding between himself and Chris Hughton following Liverpool’s 5-1 thrashing of Brighton at the weekend.

There was an awkward moment after the game, where the home boss was clearly aggravated by his German counterpart and refused to shake his hand as a result.

According to Klopp, Hughton felt disrespected by being made to wait for a handshake while Liverpool’s boss was celebrating with his players.

However, Klopp’s said it was an accident and didn’t mean to cause offence.

“It was a misunderstanding, nothing else. Nobody asked me afterwards. I could have killed the discussion,” Klopp told his pre-match press-conference ahead of Wednesday’s Spartak Moscow clash.

“I have to apologise. I went to shake his hand but Mo Salah passed and I gave him a hug. Chris wasn’t happy and he told me I have to shake to the manager first. I spoke to his assistant and I think everything is fine.

“I have been disrespectful in life but not on this occasion. Apologies, it was not my intention.”

“It was a misunderstanding. I have to apologise. I didn’t do something wrong on purpose. I wanted to shake Chris’ hand and then Mo Salah crossed my way and I gave him a hug. It wasn’t on purpose. I think and hope that everything is fine.”

We think that probably puts an end to the matter, despite the likes of Garth Crooks writing stupidly hyperbolic features on Klopp’s terrible pitch-side behaviour…

Hughton’s bad mood had probably more to do with the fact Brighton had just been taught a footballing lesson.
