We’ve got a lot of time for Danny Murphy, but this is nonsense.
Our former midfielder reckons Jurgen Klopp should take a leaf out of either Gerard Houllier or Roy Hodgson’s books – two calm managers who ‘didn’t blame referees’.
Yesterday, following Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Everton, a passionate Klopp took aim at the officials, who gave our rivals a penalty for an innocuous contact between Dejan Lovren and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, in which the latter clearly dived.
Murphy though chose to blame Liverpool’s scapegoat defender, before asking Klopp to take some responsibility too.
“He (Lovren) is a liability,” he told Match of the Day 2. “Jurgen Klopp has to look at his selection, because he keeps letting the team down. I don’t know the fella, and I’m sure he’s trying his best, but he’s not good enough.
“Fans aren’t stupid. Klopp has gone onto the pitch to have a go at the referee without seeing [the replay] first. Go and have a watch of the video.
“I remember Hodgson and Houllier, two of the most calm managers I ever played under. They would never go ranting at the ref – maybe once in a blue moon – they would calm themselves down first. The pressure was still there then.
“My mates who went the game were texting. The first thing they said is why was your top scorer taken off at 1-0 when he was still creating chances, and why were the other two left on the bench?
“Anybody who knows football can watch that back and know it was a penalty. If you get fans thinking it wasn’t, they’re wrong.”
Klopp, cannot win, can he? The media praise him for showing passion, for being entertaining, but then criticise him for reacting to such a poor, game-changing decision.
Gerard Houllier did great things at Liverpool, but for Murphy to mention Hodgson, probably the worst manager in our history, is crazy.
For the record, we want Klopp to be himself for the duration of his Liverpool career.
Should he have used his players differently against the Toffees? Arguably. Is he entitled to show anger after the game? Absolutely.
