Jack Wilshere backed for Liverpool transfer on Sky Sports

Would you take Jack Wilshere at Liverpool, Reds? A fit, healthy Wilshere – all day long. But does that player even exist?

Today on Sky Sports, Paul Merson heavily backed the midfielder to leave Arsenal in January, with Arsene Wenger basically refusing to use him in the Premier League.

The pundit and ex-Gunner said that Liverpool could be the ideal side for him to join, as barring Coutinho, we lack central midfielders who possess a creative spark.

“Liverpool maybe, I think Liverpool would take him all day long,” Merson told Sky Sports, cited in the Express.

“They rely on Coutinho to break people down, if you get Jack Wilshere as well then you’ve got two people who can break people down.

“At the moment they are very reliant on Coutinho. If Coutinho doesn’t do it, there are not too many others who can put the ball through the eye of a needle who play for Liverpool.

“For me I think Liverpool would be all over him.”

Merson has a point about our midfield, but crucially ignores Wilshere’s quite miserable fitness record.

Jurgen Klopp’s style requires his players to have unbelievable fitness levels.

Could Wilshere adapt to the German’s football, remain happy in the most heavily rotated squad in the country and perform on a regular basis?

It’s not impossible, but we’d suggest improbable.

We wouldn’t be averse to taking a risk on the 25-year-old, who has terrific technical skills and the ability to get the ball on the half-turn and dribble forward.

But unlike Merson, we’d be surprised if Liverpool are interested.
