Harry Wilson has rejected Liverpool’s contract extension, according to ESPN.
The 20-year-old did pen new terms in 2016, but his form for the U23s has merited another pay-rise.
However, the report suggests that with heavy interest from the Championship and no obvious upcoming chance of minutes in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team, Wilson is looking to leave Liverpool.
In truth, we can’t really blame him. This term, he has 12 goals and 10 assists in 16 appearances for the U23s – mindbogglingly good statistics for a winger.
Yet he hasn’t played a minute of first-team football or even made a bench.
The fact he signed a deal one year ago means we won’t lose him for nothing, but it probably is time for him to depart – perhaps on a similar deal to the one Jordon Ibe exited on.
We sold the young winger to Bournemouth for £15m, but with a buyback clause that could be activated should he fulfil his potential on the south coast.
Wilson has already proved he’s far too good for youth football and having been capped by Wales already, he needs to play first-team football somewhere. We shouldn’t stand in his way any longer.
