Paul Merson has apologised to Mo Salah before Arsenal v Liverpool

Football fans around England scoffed earlier this week when Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson named his Premier League Team of the Year so far – not including Mo Salah…

The Liverpool star is the league’s top scorer on 14 and bar Kevin de Bruyne, has been the best player in the country.

But Merson preferred Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane!

In fairness, he’s admitted his mistake…

“Yeah, I know, I apologise for that. I forgot about him!” Merse told Sky, cited in the Mirror, when asked why he left the 20-goal flyer out of his original team.

“He would be in it, but I would put him in it for Sane if I could do it again.

“I think my team is strong but I had to put Salah in it. I’m very sorry, happy Christmas, Mo.

“He should be in it, he’s top scorer in the country and Premier League – he’s not even a centre-forward!”

Merson’s Revised XI: De Gea; Walker, Mee, Tarkowski, Alonso; De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Silva; Sterling, Salah, Kane.

It weirds us out that when asked to collate a bit of editorial for your employer, Merson couldn’t be bothered to do the smallest bit of statistical research before farting out his XI.

But it really shouldn’t surprise us, in truth.

Merson’s old club Arsenal take on Liverpool tonight in a massive clash at the Emirates. Salah has been deemed fit to play and we hope he shows the pundit exactly how wrong he was!
