Liverpool manager shows Gomez huge support before Swansea clash

Jurgen Klopp has quite rightly launched a strong defence of Joe Gomez, who unfortunately had a bit of a nightmare on Friday.

Liverpool drew 3-3 at Arsenal, with Gomez making a serious blunder that allowed Alexis Sanchez to score during the Gunners’ crazy five minutes.

However, Gomez has actually been our most consistent defender this season – and that’s been from right-back which isn’t even his favoured position.

“Joe, so good, such a fantastic improvement, development, outstanding. Played for England, played for us, super,” Klopp said, cited in the Express.

“On Friday for the first goal and the third, he showed a reaction like human beings do. He is still a young lad and we have to learn. That’s how it is.”

Gomez may sit out today’s Boxing Day clash with Swansea, with Trent Alexander-Arnold likely to get a run at Anfield – but this will be rotation and not a ‘dropping’ as such.

The fact is that Liverpool fans have enormous hopes for Gomez, whose talent is incredible. He’ll learn from mistakes like these and likely make a few more before he’s fully matured.

Look at John Stones. The Englishman was a worse player than Gomez at 20-years-old, but is now the star of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City defence.
