‘He has a contract with Liverpool’ – Midfielder update supplied by Marotta

Juventus general manager Beppe Marotta has told the press that nothing is decided between his club and Emre Can, indicating the German could still pen an Anfield renewal.

The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and despite Liverpool offering him new terms, Can’s decided to wait and see if a more exciting proposal comes along – making the decision by Jurgen Klopp to make him captain last night strange.

Marotta has admitted Juve are trying to secure him, but hinted that it’s not a straight shootout between his club and Liverpool, with other top teams keen.

“The interest is clear. We want to try and bring him to us, but we cannot do it because he currently has a contract with Liverpool,” Marotta told Italian broadcaster Premium Sport, translated by BBC Sport.

“He could renew it and, moreover, there are other teams interested in him.

“We want to try and bring him to Turin. I am stating this with full awareness that he might not arrive, but we need to have important objectives.”

Can was awful last night against Swansea, but so were his team-mates.

His performance shouldn’t detract from the fact he’s been key recently, especially in the absence of skipper Jordan Henderson.

If we can announce that Can’s staying before the end of the month, this will slightly alleviate the disappointment that none of the Coutinho money has been reinvested.

If we lose Can on a free, as well as Phil, then questions will be asked if nobody is recruited before February.
