Liverpool could finally seal long-awaited transfer for £20m man

Lazar Markovic’s time at Liverpool is finally drawing to a close after a difficult four years on Merseyside.

The Serbian has not featured for the Reds since May 2015 and has been tipped to depart on a permanent basis during the January transfer window.

Spartak Moscow have emerged as likely suitors having declared an interest in signing the winger, according to the Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce.

Markovic arrived from Benfica for £20million in summer 2014 as one of the investments made by the club reportedly with the money generated by Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona.

Having boasted a promising reputation upon joining, the 23-year-old has since struggled to adapt to the Premier League and as a result failed to assert himself as a first-team option.

His four years at Anfield have included two unproductive loan spells with Fenerbahce and Sporting Lisbon, as well as a more encouraging temporary stint under Marco Silva at Hull City during the second half of last season.

Jurgen Klopp’s array of attacking options have offered Markovic no route back to senior team contention, despite the player participating in training as normal with the entire squad since failing to secure a summer move.

A stale situation is in dire need of resolution, with Markovic having endured a wasted first half of the season in a bid to reignite his stuttering career.

There is talent there to be exploited.
