Liverpool have bid rejected for popular £44m target

Liverpool have reportedly taken their first significant step in their efforts to sign Alisson Becker as their long-term solution to their goalkeeping woes.

The Brazilian shot-stopper has floated onto the Reds’ radar courtesy of a standout second season with Roma, with Jurgen Klopp seemingly intent on finally addressing a pressing concern in his team.

With both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius still failing to convince, Liverpool find themselves in desperate need of a new first choice between the sticks for the benefit of the club’s future.

Roma have rejected a bid from Liverpool for the £44million rated Alisson, according to Italian outlet Il Tempo, as cited by the Mirror.

Saturday’s demoralising FA Cup defeat to West Brom not only shattered Liverpool’s realistic chances of lifting silverware this season, but also served up a reminder of Klopp’s goalkeeper crisis.

Another disappointing Mignolet performance reeked signs of being his last as the Belgian yet again put himself in line for strong criticism.

He failed to take advantage of his opportunity ahead of recently-named no.1 Karius, who has similarly offered little in the way of encouragement.

The situation demands a ruthless approach from Klopp, with neither man having done enough to earn a place at Anfield beyond the end of the season.

If it takes a world-record fee for an elite keeper, then so be it.
