RB Leipzig troll Liverpool over Naby Keita transfer

RB Leipzig have marked the end of the January transfer window with a subtle dig in the direction of Liverpool.

The Bundesliga club took to social media to mock the Reds over their failed attempt to lure Naby Keita to Anfield earlier than his scheduled summer arrival.

Keita agreed a deal to join the club towards the end of the summer 2017 window and is set to officially sign on the first day of July.

Philippe Coutinho’s £142million move to Barcelona subsequently triggered Liverpool to pursue an advance on Keita’s deal, only for Leipzig to issue a firm refusal to sell the midfielder.

Liverpool had reportedly been prepared to offer an additional fee on top of the premium they paid to activate Keita’s release clause early.

Leipzig were understandably adamant Keita would not be sold half way through a season in which a top four finish remains uncertain.

Outgoings proved to be the theme of the Reds’ window, with a number of U23s starlets leaving on loan in search of regular first team football.

Whilst Liverpool addressed a glaring weakness with the £75million acquisition of Virgil van Dijk, they have since come under criticism for failing to replace either one of Coutinho or Daniel Sturridge, who joined West Brom on a temporary deal.
