Anfield set for bumper extension; LFC will have 2nd biggest ground in country

The next phase of the Anfield development will soon take place.

This Is Anfield are exclusively reporting that plans to expand the Anfield Road End are being finalised, with planning permission already acquired in April 2014.

Liverpool want to add 7,000 seats to the stand opposite the Kop, bringing the overall capacity of the ground up to 61,000, according to the article.

Only Old Trafford will be bigger in terms of club stadiums.

We increased to roughly 55,000 following the Main Stand expansion, which was completed at the beginning of last season.

This Is Anfield reckon the Annie Road end will be structurally similar to the New Main Stand, with three tiers and corporate boxes – with 16,000 unrestricted seats – as opposed to the 9,000 now.

Crucially, the away fans will be moved to the other side of the stand, next to the Kenny Dalglish Stand.

For us, we hope this doesn’t make the atmosphere any worse, although we understand the financial benefits – long-term. The Main Stand is a bland place to sit currently and the atmosphere at Anfield is terrible except during a classic encounter, like the Manchester City clash in January.

FSG though should be congratulated as they’re doing what they promised to. We just hope it’s not at the detriment of Anfield’s soul.
