Nicol: long-term Liverpool target is ‘going nowhere’

Steve Nicol has quashed suggestions Christian Pulisic will leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.

The USA international has rarely drifted from transfer gossip columns, with Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool having often been touted as potential suitors.

Pulisic has starred since landing on the scene in the Bundesliga, holding down a place in Dortmund’s first team and surfacing as one of Europe’s in-demand prospects.

Chelsea recently stepped up their pursuit of the 19-year-old with a view to use Michy Batshuayi, who is currently on loan at Dortmund, as part of an offer.

Discussing his future, ESPN pundit Nicol said: “I don’t think he is going to join Chelsea. I don’t think he is going anywhere.”

“Any of the top sides in the world would want Pulisic right now, in their squad if not the starting XI.”

“I think he has made it very clear that, for now, he knows Dortmund is the place for him. That is the place he will progress the best.”

“I don’t see him going anywhere.”

Philippe Coutinho’s £142million move to Barcelona has seemingly revamped rumours tipping Pulisic as a possible replacement for the Brazilian.

The Dortmund star offers the traits partially capable of filling the Coutinho-shaped void, with his vision and ability to beat defenders expected to see him transition from his wider position into a more central role.

At such an early stage in his career, another season in Germany is perfectly reasonable option as he looks to continue his development in a familiar and crucially challenging environment.

That said, his early impression promises to spark fierce competition for his services in the summer.
