Robertson empathises with Moreno after tough start to Anfield career

Andrew Robertson admits he understands Alberto Moreno’s frustration during the Spaniard’s time on the sidelines.

The Scotland international’s superb form is currently resigning his teammate to a place on the bench, marking a role reversal from earlier in the season.

Moreno started the campaign as Jurgen Klopp’s first choice left-back after defying expectations that he would leave in the summer and subsequently impressing in pre-season.

Robertson, having signed from Hull, consequently started his Anfield career as a backup as Klopp adopted a gradual approach to easing him into his setup.

December’s 7-0 Champions League win over Spartak Moscow was partially tarnished by a cruel injury blow for Moreno, carving a route to the first team for Robertson.

The latter has since flourished in the Reds’ strongest eleven and given his close competitor a difficult task breaking back into the team.

Robertson told Liverpoolfc.com: “At the start of the season I had to be patient. I’m not one of those people who will go in and start telling him [Klopp] I should be playing, it was more: ‘What can I do? What do you think I’m lacking that I need to get in the team?’”

“He told me a few things that will obviously stay between us that I had to work on, I worked on them in training but Alberto was playing well, you can’t hide away from that fact and it was unfortunate that he got injured.”

“It was great to see him out there today and getting the last 10 minutes. I’m sure he’s frustrated as well, but it’s a squad game and we’ll need everyone. But for me, playing week in, week out just now is a really pleasing thing and I’m building in confidence.”

Robertson has injected an old-fashioned vigour into Liverpool’s defensive approach, complimented by willing bursts beyond his midfielders in the final third.

That attacking ambition has crucially been matched with his expert delivery from the left-hand side, ticking a box Moreno has often struggled to in the past.

Though the former Sevilla man started the season admirably, Robertson has since asserted himself as a far more well-rounded and dependable option in both sides of the game.

He is threatening signs of solving a left-back conundrum that has so often haunted the club in recent years.
