Gary Neville’s eye-opening comments on Andy Robertson

Gary Neville hasn’t so much has apologised to Andy Robertson for his derogatory comments earlier in the season, but has certainly admitted the Scot has started to prove him wrong.

Before Christmas, the Sky Sports pundit indicated that we should offload the young left-back, who he branded not good enough.

“Do I want Robertson at left-back? Do I want Klavan as my centre-back playing at Real Madrid away or Barcelona away?’ You can’t. You can’t have those players in those games. It’s impossible. So they’ve just got to go,” he said, which was a little unfair considering how little the former Hull man had been used before winning a spot in the side.

But since he became our first-choice left-back, Robertson’s been phenomenal, without exaggeration.

He looks defensively solid and smart, while offering continued running and support up the flank. He whips in a wicked delivery and can link up with our midfielders, too.

Neville, like the rest of the media, is beginning to recognise what Liverpool fans have been saying for weeks.

“We comment a lot on players in this job, and I actually made a – not a derogatory comment about Robertson – but I said I didn’t think he was good enough really earlier on in the season,” Neville said, cited in the Echo.

“I thought he was more of the same as Moreno – better going forward, not quite good defensively.

“I have to say that, in the six months – and he’s still got a long way to go – he has proven me, not wrong, but I do feel as though I have to correct myself.

“He has impressed me a lot and has done better than I ever imagined he would, in both sides of the game.”

Robbo will face arguably his biggest test for Liverpool yet though tomorrow lunchtime, as he’ll face Neville’s old side at Old Trafford.

He’s been passed fit, meaning Spaniard Moreno will begin on the bench, thankfully, as big games seem to often overawe him.
