Klopp leading race to sign excellent Bundesliga ace as Firmino’s backup – Independent

Liverpool want another Rb Leipzig star this summer, having already confirmed Naby Keita.

We secured the Guinean last summer, but the terms of the deal meant he remained in Germany this season to aid with Rb’s European adventure.

Now, according to Miguel Delaney in the Independent, Jurgen Klopp is eyeing Timo Werner, the 22-year-old forward who scores most of Rb’s goals.

The German international is also likely to start at the World Cup, having notched 37 times since the beginning of last season.

Liverpool’s current front-three is practically perfect, but we have very little in terms of backup should one of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino pick up an injury.

With Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi on loan and set for summer exits, Klopp currently has Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke to choose from as strikers off the bench, but neither have scored a goal this season in a side that’s plundered over 100.

That is a damning statistic. Against Manchester United on Saturday, our lack of options from the bench was obvious and problematic.

It’ll be very hard to wrench Werner from Leipzig, but they’re not going to finish in the Champions League spots and the striker would likely want to follow Keita to Anfield.

Convincing the club to sell will be trickier than convincing the player, though.
