LFC ace defends teammate, positive on second-place finish

The defeat to Manchester United left us all disappointed, but Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has issued a rallying cry of sort to lift spirits within the group.

After that 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford, we’ve fallen to fourth place in the Premier League table and five points adrift of our rivals in second spot.

Naturally, the biggest objective now is to make sure we get a top-four finish and qualify for the Champions League, but the higher up we finish the better to give ourselves real momentum heading into next season.

With eight games remaining in the campaign, there are still plenty of points on offer, and that’s the message that Can has sent to all concerned as we still have our chance to close the gap in the coming weeks.

“It was very important for second place as well. That’s why it feels [even] more disappointing,” Can told the club website of the United defeat.

“But we still have the chance to be second in the table, we have a lot of matches. Now we have to see what happens from game to game — we’ll try to win ours and see where we are at the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, youngster Trent Alexander-Arnold received criticism for his part in the two goals scored by Marcus Rashford, but it’s good to see his teammate sticking up for him as Can defended him and took blame himself and said it was a failure of the team as a whole rather than an individual.

“It was not just Trent, it was me and it was a few more players. You don’t have to criticise him for the goals or anything else; it was the team. We play as a team – we win as a team and we lose as a team.”

We’ll have to be better moving forward, starting with a positive result at Anfield against Watford this weekend.
