Liverpool’s Legends were rescued by an unlikely goalscorer on Saturday as they played out an enthralling 5-5 draw in their charity match against Bayern Munich.

A friendly thriller looked to be edging out of the Reds’ reach before Bjørn Tore Kvarme popped up in the final third to find the top corner with a superb strike just inside the penalty area.

His goal proved to be the last of 10 overall as Anfield staged a memorable meeting between a congregation idols appealing to multiple generations.

The hosts, managed by the legendary Ian Rush, were 3-0 up within the first 20 minutes courtesy of goals from Dirk Kurt, Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler.

Bayern conjured a miraculous comeback to notch four first-half goals in response, before Fowler levelled things up with a deflected free-kick just before the break.

A less frenetic second-half perhaps stemmed from fitness levels as both sides fell short of producing the touch of quality required in front of goal.

That was until Xabi Alonso, playing for Bayern having featured as a Red in the first half, stepped up to expertly find the corner with an exquisite free-kick from around 20-yards out.

Just as it looked like Liverpool might be leaving in defeat, Kvarme pounced on a loose ball to save a draw Rush’s men probably deserved on the day.

A reunion of the club’s fan favourites always marks a special occasion, with heroes of the older generations teaming up with those from Istanbul that undoubtedly resonate more with the young Kopites.

In a plethora of sights to behold, Steven Gerrard lining up alongside Alonso was a personal highlight and a welcomed flashback to their ingenuity as a duo.

An excellent day for a superb cause in the LFC Foundation.
