German director admits LFC target will leave in the summer

Max Meyer will be leaving Schalke on a free transfer in the summer.

The poor Germans regularly lose their best players for no money – with Liverpool securing Joel Matip in 2016, Arsenal getting Sead Kolasinac last year and Bayern Munich already securing Leon Goretzka for summer 2018.

According to sporting director Christian Heidel, Meyer will also be on his way.

“At the moment there is no offer from us and no wish from Max to have a conversation again,” he said, reported by Goal.

Meyer has been deployed as a deep-lying, defensive midfielder this term, a much changed role from the wide-attacking one he was initially used in when breaking into the side.

He doesn’t contribute much going forward, but can dictate tempo and give his side a decent platform from which the more creative players can perform.

On a free transfer, it would be fairly risk free business, but we don’t actually consider him an upgrade on Jordan Henderson or Emre Can, which is what we need in the no.6 position.

Jorginho will be much, much more expensive, but it’ll likely be worth it.
