Liverpool eye free transfer for legendary goalkeeper – signing would cement Karius as no.1

Liverpool’s search for a goalkeeper could divert from world record fee potential to vast experience at the top of European football.

It remains to be seen how Jurgen Klopp plans to address his shot-stopping situation in the summer, with Loris Karius in the process of auditioning for a long-term starting role beyond the current campaign.

Roma’s Alisson Becker had surfaced as a possible target courtesy of his sparkling form, although interest has seemingly faded away since the emergence of his likely valuation upwards of £50million.

The Reds are now considering an approach for Spanish legend Iker Casillas, who is set to be available on a free transfer at the end of the season, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

Casillas is expected to leave Porto when his contract expires and supposedly favours a stay in Europe as opposed to continuing a trend of taking his career to China or America.

The 36-year-old had long-boasted a reputation among Europe’s most accomplished keepers, but is now far from the ever-reliable option he was at Real Madrid.

Though his arrival would lend Karius a valuable role model to learn from, Liverpool’s funds would undoubtedly be better dedicated towards strengthening the starting line up.

As mentioned before, it will likely come down to how well the Reds’ current first choice can fare in a high-stakes conclusion to the season on both the domestic and European stage.

With Simon Mignolet expected to depart, there is certainly a void to fill in some capacity.
