Robbo: I got better of Sterling and I’ll do it again

Andy Robertson has spoken in length about his upcoming battle with Raheem Sterling, as Liverpool’s former winger prepares to once again take us on for Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side are being hosted at Anfield in a mouthwatering Champions League tie this evening, of course.

And since departing Liverpool in the summer of 2015, Sterling has never been on the winning side at Anfield, with his performances often very poor after being subject to enormous booing (and abuse) throughout.

As Robbo suggests though, the Englishman is likely better equipped to handle it now, being a little older, a little wiser and a lot better.

However, our brilliant Scot is confident he can look after Sterling once again.

“Yeah, I would say I got the better of him in January but it was no easy task,” Robertson told the Echo.

“I never got forward that game as much as I would have wanted and that is credit to him and his work rate. It was tough.

“I managed to do my defensive duties and I will be looking to do that again.

“Raheem has been incredible this season. His stats and what he has been doing for City is unbelievable. He is on his way to being a world class player. He is improving every week so it will be another tough task.

“When a player comes back to a club that maybe does not agree with why he left or they don’t like him, they get booed.

“I have seen that umpteen times. But I think Raheem is getting older and can start dealing with that.

“It might have been a factor in the last game, you’d have to ask him. But as a team we never let him or any of their boys settle and we need to look to do the same again.”

Sterling is undeniably an exceptional player, especially since Guardiola got hold of him – and Liverpool fans would be foolish to write him off.

But it’s City’s left-winger Leroy Sane we’re more worried about. The young German has been scintillating recently and will go directly up against Trent Alexander-Arnold, who’s struggled in big games throughout this season.

Hopefully, our teenager can rise to the occasion.
