Shock as Klopp set to name surprise defender on LFC subs bench

Liverpool’s central defensive injury crisis has hit at the worst possible time.

Ahead of tonight’s crucial Champions League quarterfinal with Manchester City, we’re down to just two senior players who can perform in the position.

Joel Matip is out for the season, Joe Gomez got injured on England duty and usually reliable deputy Ragnar Klavan is also sidelined.

Even Emre Can is crocked.

As a result, the Echo suggest young Irishman Conor Masterson is likely to be named on the bench incase something happens to Virgil van Dijk or Dejan Lovren during the 90.

Masterson has never made an appearance for Liverpool’s first-team, but did once make the bench for our bizarre FA Cup tie with Exeter when Jurgen Klopp quite literally selected a team of children.

He’s 19-years-old and has done ‘ok’ for our U23s this term, but in reality, a European tie with arguably the best team in the world right now is far beyond anything he’s ever experienced.

Still, it’s rare for central defenders to go off injured, and we just have to cross our fingers that nothing happens to van Dijk or Lovren, who have enough on their plate with the threat of Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane.
