Journalist Daniel Taylor has explained in the Guardian how Jurgen Klopp reacted when he saw Manchester City’s training complex yesterday.

The German had to travel to Manchester for media duties ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash – and got to see where our opponents practice…

The Etihad Campus is a monstrously impressive facility, which includes a separate Academy Stadium and countless immaculate training pitches.

Taylor writes:

“In one of the quieter moments the German could be found in an upstairs room of City’s training ground, gazing out of the window with row after row of pristine football pitches as far as the eye could see. “Is this all City’s?” he wanted to know, and it was unmistakable envy in his voice. The answer was yes. “Wow! Very big, very good.” Melwood, Liverpool’s practice ground, must feel almost Lilliputian in comparison.”

Liverpool are regenerating our own training facilities, of course.

The plan is to leave Melwood and make the first-team base at Kirby as well, alongside the youth base – which was a directive delivered by Klopp himself.

Planning permission for the £50m project has been accepted, although it won’t be ready for a few years yet.

In a few hours time though, the quality of City’s training facilities will count for nothing.

Liverpool have a 3-0 lead from the Anfield leg, but will need to be at our very best to qualify for the semi-finals.
