Liverpool’s centre-back Dejan Lovren has waxed lyrical about his defensive partner Virgil van Dijk.

The pair have recently starred against Manchester City, conceding just one goal to the best team in England over two legs, which should have been ruled out for a foul on the Dutchman anyway.

Van Dijk arrived in January for £75m and after one or two games in which he used to find his feet, has been incredible.

What’s more, he’s massively improved those around him, especially Lovren and goalkeeper Loris Karius, who’ve both visibly benefited from his leadership and communication.

Lovren loves the fact the planet’s most expensive defender wears red…

“It’s a beginning and I still have the confidence we can do it even better,” he told the official website.

“In such a short time for him, it’s quite exceptional that he adapted to our style so quickly. It’s always difficult to play in a big club like Liverpool, people have massive expectations.

“But we are his teammates, we give him the biggest support we can give, and we are proud we have his quality in our team because it helps the team. I am even more confident next season we can be much, much better.

“When you have the quality – and you add more quality – in your teammates, then it helps you as a player and as a team. I feel we can do better, it’s just the beginning.

“It’s really good at the moment, but I am never satisfied with ‘really good’ – I am a guy who is searching for perfection. I know it’s not possible [to always play the perfect game] as Jürgen said, but we want to always give our best on the training ground and on the pitch.”

With Joel Matip out for the season, Lovren will partner Van Dijk until the summer.

That means barring injury, he’ll have two Champions League semi-finals to play.

The fact he’s got van Dijk alongside him though fills us with confidence, as does Lovren’s recently improved form.
