The England international, who has enjoyed a hugely impressive first season at Anfield, had to go off early after taking a knock to the knee, and was replaced b Georginio Wijnaldum.

Liverpool went on to thrash Roma 5-2 in a highly satisfying evening, but news of Ox’s injury certainly takes some gloss off things.

Speaking afterwards, Klopp was quoted as saying the 24-year-old’s injury looks ‘really bad’ and based on that you’d have to worry about his chances of playing for us again this season.

The Ox certainly looked in a great deal of pain as he hobbled off, and if he does end up missing what could yet be a glorious Champions League campaign and then the World Cup with England that would be a really harsh blow.

So improved since his move from Arsenal, the Ox deserves credit for his role in getting us as far as we’ve got and it would be a shame to see him miss out on some big games for club and country after probably the season of his career so far.
