Klopp’s Roma warning: ‘We are not Barcelona…’

Jurgen Klopp thinks unlike Barcelona, Liverpool can win in Italy next week against AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Barca took a 4-1 lead over there in the quarters, but fell 3-0 to lose the tie on away goals, against the odds.

After Liverpool’s 5-2 win at Anfield last night, a 3-0 defeat next Wednesday will also see us knocked out.

But can lightning strike twice? Time will tell, but Liverpool will be far more weary than our Catalan counterparts were…

“I learned tonight we can still win in Rome, they need to score against us,” Klopp told a post-match news conference, cited by Goal.

“We are not Barcelona, they are one of the best two or three teams in the world and won so many things – we didn’t. We will fight with all we have.

“It’s much better than I expected before the game but already I’m more interested in the Stoke game than the second leg against Roma.

“The atmosphere tonight was absolutely outstanding and everyone who has a ticket I expect the same on Saturday [at home against Stoke City], because we need it.

“It’s a massive game, we need to be ready, we will try everything we can to be ready for that.”

The Stoke clash is an interesting one. They need to beat us at the weekend in order to stay up, but our attention, despite what Klopp says, will largely be on the second leg.

It’s so irritating that we conceded those two late goals last night, because it would have enabled the possibility of resting players early next week – keeping them fresh for the top four fight.

The squad is so thin right now that we badly need our backup players to do a job versus the Potters.

We need Joe Gomez, Nathaniel Clyne, Danny Ings and others to seriously step up.
