Steven Gerrard’s rumoured replacement ought to excite U18s…

Liverpool could be set to replace one club legend with another as they look to find a new manager for the club’s U18s.

Yet another coaching void is in need of filling following the departure of Steven Gerrard, who was officially appointed as the new Rangers manager on Friday.

The Anfield great has also taken Academy coach Michael Beale and club ambassador Gary McAllister as part of his backroom staff as he approaches a complete rebuild in response to Celtic’s dominance at the top of Scottish football.

Beale had been tipped as a possible replacement for Gerrard given his success as U23s boss prior to his role as assistant coach for Brazilian club Sao Paulo.

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler is a leading contender to take on the job, according to the Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce.

Fans need no reminder of the attacking pedigree he has the potential to impart as a coach, with 189 goals in 369 appearances for the Reds to his name.

The new U18s manager, whoever it may be, will be greeted by a supremely-gifted side that finished in a respectable third place in the Premier League U18 North.

Gerrard himself expertly cultivated not only a talented but also a hard-working and dedicated group of youngsters, imposing a humble and determined attitude sure to stay with many of them for the rest of their career.

Stage one was a lesson in unrivalled passion, work ethic, leadership and all-action contribution. Could lesson two be in the value of widely-envied goal-scoring prowess?
