LFC will be invited to new £100m FIFA Club Cup that could change football as we know it

A monstrously commercial 24-team FIFA Club Cup could replace the current Club World Cup in the not so distant future.

According to the Times, plans are well underway and Liverpool would be automatically invited as one of the 12 European entrants due to us winning at least three European Cups. Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax and Inter Milan would also earn immediate qualification for the same reason, with it yet to be decided how the other three sides would qualify.

FIFA would also scrap the Confederations Cup to avoid strenuous demands on players and only host the competition every four years.

The Times report that UEFA are furious with the idea as it could affect the marketability of their flagship event, the Champions League.

However, it’s also mentioned that FIFA president Gianni Infantino has already held positive talks with some of Europe’s biggest clubs – who are naturally interested in the potential £100m of revenue every tournament appearance would generate.

For us, it sounds like a horrible idea. FIFA should keep their noses out of club football, frankly.

All they want to do is squeeze every drop they can out of the game and by separating Europe’s biggest clubs from everyone else every four years, financial and sporting gaps will only wider and damage football.

We don’t like it.
