Gary Lineker waxes lyrical over Liverpool’s ‘overshadowed’ star

Gary Lineker has recognised the multi-faceted threat of Roberto Firmino ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League final showdown with Real Madrid this Saturday.

The Brazilian has registered comfortably his most productive season since signing for the Reds with 27 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions.

Firmino has enjoyed a particularly stunning maiden Champions League campaign having so far scored 11 of Liverpool’s competition-high tally of 46.

For his contributions to be deemed overlooked is testament to the magnificent season Mohamed Salah has enjoyed for the Reds.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Lineker said: “I think he’s one of the best all-round strikers in world football. He’s terrific. An all-round striker.”

“Yes, obviously he’s been overshadowed a little bit by Salah’s great season.”

It promises to require the best of Liverpool’s entire front three if Jurgen Klopp’s side are to stand any chance of denying Madrid a third consecutive European crown.

A key responsibility for Firmino lies in unnerving a defence that has been exposed for its flaws on numerous occasions throughout the competition.

With the aggression in his pressing to snatch the ball high up the pitch and the space left for Salah and Sadio Mane by the attacking ambition of Madrid’s full-backs, Liverpool’s system and approach promises chances in Kiev.

It could also come down to Firmino to play a leading role in restricting the likes of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric the time to look up and feed their very own fearsome trio.
