Nabil Fekir’s £53m transfer to Liverpool takes late twist

Nabil Fekir’s move to Liverpool has been thrown into doubt after his medical raised concerns ahead of a proposed £53million move.

The Lyon playmaker was expected to be officially announced as a Liverpool player on Friday following the agreement of a fee and personal terms.

Talks for the Frenchman had accelerated over the preceding days, despite Lyon’s president Jean-Michel Aulas living up to his reputation as a tough negotiator and playing down suggestions of an imminent transfer.

Anfield representatives successfully accelerated a deal whilst in France, with Fekir himself appearing to take part in interviews with Liverpool’s official club website.

Concerns over the knee injury that saw him miss a large section of the 2015/2016 campaign has been the root of a delayed announcement, according to the Guardian’s Andy Hunter.

Fekir’s prominence in the Lyon starting line up across all competitions over the past two seasons makes it difficult to comprehend fears over his fitness.

The 24-year-old played 40 games in 2017/2018, registering 23 goals and eight assists as an instrumental figure in his side’s Champions League qualification.

This followed a 49-game 2016/2017 season, notably involving three more competitions, across which he scored 14 and assisted 12.

A stalled announcement is unlikely to mark a damning obstacle given how far the deal already appears to have progressed.
