Mohamed Salah starts on the bench for Egypt’s World Cup opener

Mohamed Salah will start from the bench in Egypt’s World Cup Group A opener against Uruguay this afternoon.

The Liverpool forward recently recovered from the shoulder injury that saw him forced off during the first half of last month’s Champions League final.

He has been eased back into training as a precaution since the incident, making his place among the substitutes self-explanatory with easier and perhaps more defining group games against Russia and Saudi Arabia to come.

Manager Hector Cuper confirmed on Thursday that Salah had returned to fitness in time to be available for the Uruguay clash, although offered no clue as what role he would play.

Amr Warda will start on the right-hand side for Egypt, presumably in the position Salah would have occupied had he been ready to play from the off.

Uruguay’s notorious physicality could have played a role in Salah’s place on the bench, although captain Diego Godin recently insisted there were no specific plans to combat the PFA Player of the Year.

Russia’s opening day hammering of Saudi Arabia showcased two teams Salah will feel supremely confident of dissecting as Egypt look to make it out of their group, undoubtedly making his absence against Uruguay less of a concern.
