Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has remarkably revealed he knew Andrew Robertson was a quality player as long as five years ago.

This is because the Dutchman first moved to Celtic in 2013 and came up against Robertson in his first season, when he was still at Dundee United.

‘Robbo is doing fantastic. Obviously when I came to Celtic, in my first season he played at Dundee United and I already thought he’s a very good player and I thought at that time he should join Celtic!’ Van Dijk told Liverpool’s 2017/18 end-of-season DVD, as quoted on the official site.

‘I think I said it to one of the scouting guys as well – sometimes I like to give my opinion on players. He’s just a great player, [he] works hard. If you need ratings of a game, I don’t think he’d ever go lower than a six.

‘You can trust him and the connection I have with him is getting better every game. He knows obviously what he has in me, and I get it the other way around as well. He’s a good guy as well and that obviously helps too.’

The pair then had spells at Southampton and Hull City as they made names for themselves in the Premier League, and finally found themselves at Anfield together in 2017/18.

Robertson joined in the summer before Van Dijk finally arrived in January, and both are now key players in a much-improved LFC defence.

It’s great to hear VVD rates Robbo so highly and that he’s been aware of him for so long, as it’s always intriguing how players’ careers intertwine in different ways.

Both played major roles in helping us to the Champions League final this season and their presence at the back surely gives the Reds big hope of going that step further and winning silverware next season!
