Liverpool table mind-boggling £160million offer for Spanish starlet – report

Liverpool have reportedly lodged a mammoth formal offer for Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio according to reports from Spain.

The Spanish starlet was supposedly subject to interest from the Reds last summer as Jurgen Klopp looked to strengthen his attacking options.

Intent on bolstering his front line further, the German has turned to the 22-year-old again amid speculation linking him to a Bernabeu departure – or so the Spanish press would have fans believe.

The club have tabled a ‘firm’ bid of £160million (€180million) for the winger, according to Mundo Deportivo. The transfer window has officially hit nonsense season.

Asensio is contracted at Real Madrid until 2023 and is believed to have a buy-out clause of €700million, putting any rumoured exit into serious doubt.

Newly-appointed Real manager Julen Lopetegui won’t be letting one of his brightest talents leave, especially with Gareth Bale facing an uncertain future at the club.

It seems highly unlikely Klopp will be targeting another first choice front man, with Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane refusing to be split apart or dislodged from the starting lineup.

Such funds are also likely to be dedicated towards to more glaring areas of need, including the acquisition of a new goalkeeper and a replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

Addressing the latter prove costly in light of the £53million fee Liverpool had agreed for Nabil Fekir prior to the collapse of the move.

That deal may still be resurrected yet, although any fresh negotiations are likely to be put on hold until after the World Cup.

In summary, we would advise not to get those Asensio shirts printed just yet.
