James Pearce definitive with transfer opinion

According to the Echo’s transfer guru James Pearce, Liverpool won’t be signing Croatia World Cup star Domagoj Vida – or any central defender before the end of the summer window.

The journalist shared his view on Twitter late last night.

There’s been murmurings that we’d go back in for another defender due to Joel Matip breaking down while on US tour.

The Cameroonian missed the back end of last season injured and left the field against Borussia Dortmund after just 22 minutes.

Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez have also had consistent injury problems, while Ragnar Klavan isn’t considered a long-term option for the role alongside Virgil van Dijk.

A fit Lovren is something we can get behind, but there’s no guarantee the 29-year-old will be able to play a full season – unfortunately.

The news coming from the club is that we won’t be delving into the market before August 8, but we think Klopp might have a trick up his sleeve, should a player he especially likes become available.
