Shaqiri hits back at Gary Neville criticism

Having a go at Gary Neville on your first day on the job? You’ll fit in well, Xherdan!

Liverpool’s new Swiss creative midfielder Shaqiri was asked by James Pearce in his recent Echo interview about the criticism sent his way by Gary Neville – who labelled him a ‘disgrace’ for his performances at the World Cup.

This was interesting in the first place as Switzerland got to the Last 16 and Shaqiri scored a crucial goal in the group stages – but our new no.23 wasn’t fazed.

“They were Man United players, maybe they don’t like Liverpool,” Shaqiri responded!

“I don’t know, it could be. Some people like you, some people don’t like you. I don’t want to comment on what is said by people I don’t know.”

We’re confident he’s going to work extremely hard under Jurgen Klopp, who simply doesn’t abide passengers in his teams.

Shaqiri has the fitness, power and tenacity to press opponents, while possessing a wand of a left-foot we hope he puts to equal good use.

It’s unlikely he’ll be an automatic starter, but the 26-year-old will play plenty of matches for Liverpool this season – most likely as a replacement for either Mo Salah or Sadio Mane when our two brilliant wing-forwards need a break or are unavailable.

Shaqiri could make his debut at the weekend, when Liverpool face Manchester United in another pre-season friendly, stateside.
